This is a very fine, English Victorian 8-Day Grandfather Clock. It was purchased in London, England. It is in very good condition.
Kalabergo was an Italian clock maker who moved to Banbury, England in Early 1840's. He was quite successful and his business grew rapidly. He had no relatives in England so he asked his nephew to move from Milan to England and become him apprentice. Together they continued to grow the business. However, the nephew became impatient and did not want to wait for his uncle's passing to take control of the business. He killed his uncle and took control of the business. He was arrested, convicted and became the very last person to be publicly hanged in England in 1849.
This Long case Clock has an elegant stature.
The Hood has a Swan Neck Pediment which frames the Central Urn Brass Finial. The Pediment is beautifully pronounced and has Brass Rosettes placed at the center of each Scroll.
The Glazed Door is framed with Marquetry Stringing.
The Face of the Clock is beautifully hand painted. The center of the Dial is Light Cream. There are detailed Floral and Foliage Spandrels at each corner. The paint is still quite bold, in Deep Crimson, Dark Blue, and Emerald Green and beautiful Gilding.
It is beautifully inscribed Kalabergo, Banbury on the lower portion of the Dial.
The Clock has pierced, Scroll Work Hands.
The Clock has an Eight Day Movement. It is Rack Striking with an Anchor Escapement. It records Seconds and date.
The Hood has carved, Fluted Columns at each side of the Door.
The Case has a spectacular Pattern of Mahogany and Rosewood Cross Banding framing Mahogany Panels.
The Long Door below has a lovely Floral and Foliage Pattern inlaid into the center.
The Door is flanked by Reeded Quarter columns with Brass Capitols and Feet, matching the Full Hood Columns.
The Door opens to reveal the weights and pendulum.
On the inside of the Door is a beautifully scripted, sheet of paper describing the clock, possibly from a previous owner or clock dealer.
The Clock is supported upon Bracket Feet.
The Case has delicate proportions and a spectacular pagination.
