This COMPACTUM was made in England circa 1860.
We purchased it in Oxford, England.
The COMPACTUM is made of Mahogany. It has a rich, Deep Mahogany Patina.
This is an English Victorian Rococo Gentleman's' Compactum. It is very good condition.
A Compactum is a piece of furniture which combines the practicality of an Armoire and Chest of Drawers into one piece.
During the Victorian Era these pieces were usually commissioned from a Cabinet Maker by the gentleman of a wealthy household.
The entire design of the Compactum is completely unique. The center is elevated in height and pronounced forward. It has an opulently carved, Pronounced Cornice. It flows beautifully around the entire top of the piece.
This Compactum has a fabulous Rococo Design.
The Full Length Mirrored Doors at each side, the Central Doors and the Three Drawers at the center are all framed and embellished with spectacular Foliate Scroll Work.
The moulding is rich and scalloping. The Mirrors on the Doors are beautifully beveled and follow the design of the carving.
The Doors open to reveal a Storage Compartment built into the Left Hand Side with a Clothing Rail just below.
On the Right Hand Side is a Clothing Rail.
The Double Doors at the center open to reveal a Storage Compartment with a Shelf running across the center for storing folded articles of clothing.
At the center is a spectacular Display Area with exquisite Fretwork Carving at the Corners meeting at the center in Scroll Work.
Flanking the Display Area, the Straight Pilasters are supported upon large Acanthus Scrolls. It is simply beautiful!
The Three Graduated Drawers are finely made and beautifully framed by Scroll Work.
They open to reveal roomy interiors for your folded articles of clothing.
The Apron scallops beautifully. It is exquisitely carved.
The Hardware is all original. This includes the incredibly opulent Rococo Escutcheons, Drop Pulls, and Handles.
This is a very fine Rococo Style English Victorian Compactum .
It will make a spectacular impact upon the design of your Master Bedroom.
