LAKE SUPERIOR AGATE
'BIG HORSE'
5 POUNDS, 8 OUNCES.
This big banded Laker was found in a farm field near Rice, Minnesota just last spring. It is completely banded with no crystal quartz. It has a big, banded face that covers one side of the stone, with a thick, red oxidized band that measures 1/4" to 1/2" wide. Rich, creamy-white and red colored, with many medium to large tubes covering the exterior are surrounded by fine, swirly banding. Big stone at exactly 5.50 pounds. 'Lakers' in excess of 5 pounds don't come around often, don't let this one get away! Nicely shaped for display, weathered, and smooth nodule. A great centerpiece for your collection!
The
agate slang; "Big Horse" was coined by the late George Flaim (1922-2001) of Duluth, Minnesota, one of
the 'grandfathers' of our hobby. He would say, "It's a big
horse", when referring to a large banded Laker. He was one of the true pioneers of Lake Superior agate collecting and lapidary, He is sadly missed by the crew.
