Historic newspapers are a fascinating collectible. Many people know of the 20th century newspapers with topics from WWII where huge headlines reported Pearl Harbor, the death of Adolf Hitler, Hiroshima, D-Day, and so many other 20th century events. People have seen those, and they are quite striking. What is not known to many people is that American newspapers from the beginning of our country are still around!
Yes, there are still American newspapers around from the early colonial 1700's through the Civil War, the death of Abraham Lincoln, the Custer Massacre, and the Indian Wars with Geronimo and Sitting Bull. Those topics can all be found in original newspapers!
The best, and most surprising, is that newspapers which reported on the Revolutionary War are still alive and well! One can find reports on famous events such as Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, George Washington, Yorktown, the Boston Tea Party, and the Boston Massacre in original newspapers from when those events occurred! Check out my auctions, you will be most pleased!!
Throughout history, libraries bound the newspapers into volumes for safe record keeping. That is how they survived so nicely to this day. They were made of strong rag content, and that is why it is in such nice strong condition. They can be handled without fear of damage. In fact, they are much more durable than modern newspapers which are made of pulp.
