I am not an expert in antique photography, and am also unsure if this is Civil War era or perhaps Spanish American War. Whatever the case, I do believe the officer is wearing a civil war medal of honor on his breast. The photograph looks a lot like an early photo of General Custer. Since I am not a student of the period, I cannot vouch for this. Anyway, it's a great historical photo. I just got it in a collection of Indian Cabinet Cards, and since I don't collect non-Indian cards, I'm auctioning this here. Reverse of the card is blank.
On Nov-17-08 at 06:33:45 PST, seller added the following information:I have just gotten some updated information on this photo:
The soldier in your picture is Lt. Edward S. Godfrey of the 7th U.S. Cavalry. He
was with Custer at the Little Big Horn and in command of Company K. He survived
the battle, taking part in Major Reno's defense. Rather than the Medal of Honor,
he is wearing membership medals of the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) and
MOLLUS (Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States). Although a
Civil War soldier, the uniform is that of the Indian fighting Army of the 1870s
- 1880s. Hope that helps.
