MY FATHER WAS AN E. HOWARD EMPLOYEE FOR 35 YEARS AND INSTRUMENTAL ALONG WITH DANA BLACKWELL IN MARKETING THE E. HOWARD REPRODUCTION CLOCKS. HE WAS ALSO A COLLECTOR OF FINE CLOCKS. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE CLOCKS:
This is an absolutely beautiful and very clean 8 day weight driven banjo clock from around 1850 and probably made by george hatch in the Attleboro, Ma area.
my father collected many of these hatch style clocks.
This clock has many characteristics of the banjos made by George Hatch such as THE removable pendulum bob, the wood pendulum stick, THE CIRCULAR KEYSTONE and the FAMILIAR door latches.
it is not signed anywhere (as i'm sure you know hatch never signed his dial's or movements)
The dial - MOON hands - bob are all original with the dial showing very little flaking around the four screw holes where the dial fastens.
the paint is very stable and original. THE MOON HANDS AND BOB ARE IN FANTASTIC
ORIGINAL CONDITION.
note: no extra holes in the dial area-a very good sign
The weight is very old-i am not sure if it is original.
The glasses appear to be original with the waviness and are absolutely beautiful. The black backing could have been repainted at some time but it is very hard to tell-certainly The paint has been there a long time.
The case is in great original condition with only a minor nick or dent here and there and has the first finish.
The bottom of the case is not cracked or smashed. the bottom board and glue blocks are intact.
the throat and bottom weight baffle's are not original but look very old and look very nice.
The back is original and IN one piece WITH NO CRACKS OR SPLITS.
The original movement looks great. it fastens to the case in the typical hatch fashion with 2 screws. it runs beautifully-it has been running in my office at home since 2003 when my father passed away.
IT IS WOUND EVERY 7 DAYS AND WAS Last cleaned on 10/11/07.
It measures 28 3/4 inches tall. This is a great example of the period and from the Attleboro area making it a nice collector piece .
AN ORIGINAL KEY IS INCLUDED.
for more information about this clock the best reference is in the NAWCC bulletin no. 310 page 14 by Steve Petrucelli. It has excellent information on george Hatch and other Attleboro makers.
THIS IS BY FAR ONE OF THE NICEST HATCH CLOCKS MY FATHER OWNED
