Here is a very uncommon, attractive and seldom seen design of a cuckoo clock made by the American Cuckoo Clock Co., out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is a very hard to find motif of the cuckoo bird on the crown piece along with a cuckoo bird on each side of the clock case. The clock is 22 inches from the top of the crown piece to the bottom of the finals (not including the weights and pendulum). The clock is 15 inches wide and 6 inches deep. The clock case and crown piece along with all the great carvings on it are all made of black walnut wood and are in perfect condition. Of all the carvings that you see on this great cuckoo clock case, there is only one small ½ inch crack and I will let the new owner try to locate it. The crown piece of this clock is in perfect condition with no repairs at all made to it, you just don’t find these 100 year plus clocks in that condition any more, and all the nail holes on the crown piece match the holes on the roof of the clock case. All the great carvings on the clock case look as if they were carved last night.
The clock dial is 5 inches in diameter and has the pinned on numerals. The clock hands are slightly different in appearance, the hour hand is made of bone, however the minute hand is not (maybe celluloid). I really don’t know what it is made of, but they are not a matched set(check photo) The clock has the wooden carved cuckoo bird that has the flapping wings along with the moving beak. Both finials are in great shape and the weights are 7 ½ inches long and are a matched set. The pendulum is correct to this type of cuckoo clock and is 7 ¾ inches long and 3 inches in diameter. There are two small 3 inch doors, one on each side of the clock case used for adjustments. The clock has a thick cast brass movement that is stamped Made In Germany on it and also has the brass chains that are correct to this clock, not steel chains. The bellow tubes appear to be original to the clock and even the bellow tops are very old and have outstanding sound to them. I can’t believe that they are original and in the condition they are in from circa 1900 (see photo). I had this clock hanging up for several days and the time side of the movement keeps perfect time with a quartz clock, it’s right on. However the other side of the movement is not correct and will need some adjustment. It does not call out the proper hour and half hour that it should. I will add that the movement will need to be cleaned and this alone might correct this problem. The label from the American Cuckoo Clock Company on the back door of the cuckoo clock is about 85% complete, see photo. All in all, I have to call this clock a “Real Chestnut” that someone along the line really took care of, I don’t think this clock has been in to many different hands since it was made. This clock is being sold as is due to shipping. It will be packed with care to assure it gets to your home in the same condition that it leaves my home. If your in the area of central Tennessee stop in and pick the clock up, this way we would not have to worry about that dreadful shipping situation.
Just a short note to the collectors out there. In the last ten years I only come across four of this motif clock. The other three had the long leg of the crown piece on the right side of the clock as you face the clock with the bird facing to the right. This clock has the long leg of the crown piece on the left side of the clock with the bird facing left.(maybe a left hand carver). So if you have this clock in your collection and your bird is on the long right leg side of the crown piece facing right, here is your chance to pick up that other variation you didn’t know existed. Those carvers were playing games over a hundred years ago at the American Cuckoo Clock Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mail me with any questions before bidding.
