This E R Watts theodolite Serial No 14025 (c1920) is in excellent optical, mechanical, and cosmetic condition and comes complete with a tripod.The all brass instrument is finished in a black lacquer (some losses)with nickel plated millheads. The 9 inch (230 mm) telescope has a 1.5 inch (38 mm) objective lens with no damage or fungal growth, and internal focusing to give an extremely good, sharp, bright, inverted image. The eyepiece focuses separately on the crosshairs. There are two excellent spirit levels. The 4 inch vertical circle is silvered and finely calibrated with two silvered verniers and excellent magnifying readers. The horizontal or azimuth circle is enclosed, silvered, and calibrated with two glazed ports (some fungal growth on the glass), verniers and readers. The table is engraved for E R Watts & Son Ltd London No 14025.The whole sits on a tribrach with three levelling screws, a centering plate with locking ring, a threaded tripod mount, and a hook for a plumbob. There is a fine, but well used, fitted mahogany case with working lock & key, two picks, rayshade, graticule, plumbob, brush, and eyepiece shade. There is a label for the maker and three Repair/Adjust labels dated 1935, 1949, and 1964. The case measures 17 x 7.5 x 7.5 inches and weighs 9.6 kg. The robust hardwood and metal tripod stand, which carries the makers name, has a single adjustable leg and a thread protector cap. It is 60 inches long and weighs 6.2 kg.
