Kashan is an oasis city in the province of Ifsahan situated on a caravan route in the Dasht-e Kavir desert, which is right in the heart of Iran. It is heavily dependent on the mountains nearby, which provide water for the inhabitants; many houses in the city are built below the ground level to protect them from heat and scorpions. The weavers of this city pride themselves on having more than 5 centuries of experience producing stunning rugs and carpets, with only one recorded interruption in the 18th century caused by the Afghan invasion. In the 16th and 17th centuries the city was famous for its royal workshops, it is said that kings from wide spread corners of the world went there to buy carpets in person. The oldest remaining Persian Kashan rug dates back to 1542, and is displayed in the Victoria and Albert museum in London. At the end of the 19th century the flourishing garment trade took centre stage, however, it wasn't long before the rug trade retook it's rightfulplace in history. At the beginning of the 20th century they used to import Manchester wool.Manchester Wool: Manchester wool is almost entirely exclusive to one genre of rug known as the "Manchester Kashan," although has been known to have been used in other types of rugs from rug producing countries. Manchester wool is derived from a specific type of sheep variety called the Merino sheep. In the instance of Manchester Kashan Rugs and carpets, these are rugs which implimented the use of Merino wool originating from Australia. The processing into yarn used in weaving such rugs was done in Manchester England, and ultimately exported to Iran for weaving. The Manchester Kashan is a very unique variety of Kashan, with a naturally high luster, and long staple fiber. A Persian Kashan rug is easily recognizable because they have quite a limited range of patterns; most of them having a single diamond-shaped medallion in the middle, with a typical combination of curves and right angles and completed with a myriad of floral motifs (Shah Abbasi), leaf motifs and arabesques. Wild hunting scenes, palmettos and vases can also be found. A Persian Kashan rug will usually have a rather limited palette, with red, ivory, navy blue and some greens being the predominant colors. Ocre, olive green, white and brown can be found occasionally. Generally, the colors will be arranged in such a way as to convey a very pleasing contrast, not bold, but more conservative and sober in appearance suited for stylish classical interiors. There are beautiful commercial rugs in the late 19th century. Specialists and experts describe them as "the rugs we walk on, but rarely study". I found this the perfect statement as there are rugs that can be walked on but due to their "superior quality" we call them meditation rugs or study rugs. What they offer us is a culture, an expert weaver, an artisan example of our innermost private solitude. This is that Elite Pershan Manchester Kashan masterpiece. It is in no means your average Persian Rug. Handwoven authentic Manchester Kork Kashan, flowering vase meditation carpet w dim of 4'5 x 6.6. All natural and vegetal dyes,KPSI of approx 225..extremely fine...with the finest Manchester Merino Kork wool. This is the softest and finest wool from the belly,neck and upperarm of baby lambs...the finest of all wools that has a texture very similar to velvet. A beautiful field of a flowering vase of ingenious conception in RARE colors with gold that come to life on the carpet!!!!! Pile is good . There is oxidation to brown showing a couple knotheads . Side edges show knotheads where carpet was folded in due to very tight weave.(easily can be overcast,if desired) North and south have some end loss.(see pic). Shipping is $50 in the continental US.
