This Spanish Colonial chest dates from the early 18th century.
There are 3 scenes over the lid:
The Crucifixion
In the front:
There is the archangel Raphael holding the fish of Tobias. Raphael helped Tobias to cash a fish, the heart, the liver and gall of which were used by Tobias to drive away a demon and cure his father blindness. And in the other side, there is the archangel Gabriel.
On the sides of the chest:
There is the archangel
Michael in both sides. Michael is with his shield and dressed like a Spanish solder and in the other side Michael is with his sword.
The chest is 27 inches long, 15 inches wide and 8 inches tall; it weighs over 18 pounds of solid wood. The hinges, the cast iron lock and key have their original design and work as they should. The ivory is intricately hand carved as you may see in the pictures below if you need more pictures of this items please let me know.
