This is a set of porcelain Gulf building letters that reads GULFLEX. Each letter is blue porcelain and mounted on two white porcelain rails which in turn can be mounted to the side of a building. These porcelain letters are in NEAR MINT condition. I do not believe they were ever mounted on a gas station because there are no chips at the screw mounting holes as is almost always the case on a used sign like this. Another thing that makes me believe this was never mounted to a gas station is the fact that the bolts that protrude from the back of each letter that hold the letters to the rails are not even the least bit rusty or corroded. The only thing that keeps this set of letters from being classified as C-10 (MINT) is a small chip on the bottom of the letter "L". (see close-up, barely visible). This is most likely from being banged around in storage for the last 50 years. I would still grade this as a C-9.5. The porcelain still retains its original glossy shine on both the rails and all the letters. . The Gulf gasoline jobber that I purchased this from, told me that he didn't think his father, before him, had ever used this set of letters. It had been stored in the attic of his warehouse since the 1950's and forgotten about. Gulflex was Gulf Oil Co's trademarked name for a lubrication. A two bay Gulf station was traditionally marked GULFLEX over the bay that had the lift or in some cases a pit, and over the other bay was the word WASHING, also in blue porcelain letters. The washing bay had a drain in it instead of a lift or a pit.. I also have a set of WASHING porcelain letters for sale.
