This is a perfect example of the extremely rare POOLE STONEWARE WOODCOCK which is cleverly hiding amongst ferns - very lifelike. It is another of the trial items modelled by the late Barbara Linley-Adams in the 1970s, but this time we can all understand just why it remained a trial item, and was never put into full production.
One of the reasons for trialling an item was to see if it was possible to successfully produce it economically, and the Woodcock failed because of its beak. It's a long beak measuring 4 cm from head to tip, and Poole's first problem was that it broke when the unfired clay model was removed from the mould. The very earliest trials had the beak totally unsupported, but it frequently broke off during the making stage, or melted and bent during the kiln firing, so it was remodelled with the tip of the beak touching the ground. Whilst this helped strengthen the beak during modelling, it didn't fully resolve the problem of it bending or sagging in the heat of the kiln. This example of a perfect Woodcock (I have checked it very thoroughly and it is a perfect example) with that important
STRAIGHT BEAK - OFF THE GROUND.
This, then, is one of the very few rare ones to ever reach the market. It measures almost 15 cm in length, and has the POOLE ENGLAND impressed lozenge mark on its base, together with what I believe to be the monogram of June Cole.
Don't miss this one. You might not see another for a long time.
IMPORTANT.
I have received numerous broken items which were badly, even irresponsibly packaged, and understand the disappointment this causes, and the often disproportionate amount of time it takes to resolve the matter.
Usually, whether insurance is taken or not, the end result is unsatisfactory; results in negative feedback for the seller and retaliatory negative feedback for the buyer;
and regardless of the financial loss, the loss to the world of the item.
POLICY.
With this in mind, my policy is ALWAYS to package to minimise risk of damage in the post - regardless of the value of the item - within the constraints of cost thresholds.
I recommend insurance, particularly for the more valuable items,
but will ensure that any insurance claim will not be invalidated on the grounds of faulty packaging, and will make a full refund in the event of breakage upon return of the item/s and take full responsibility for the work involved in making
the claim.
I use the best available packaging materials and make NO CHARGE for this service. Postage is charged at cost.
