S.T. Dupont-Paris
In 1872 Simon Tissot Dupont bought a workshop that created leather briefcases for diplomats and businessmen, thus founding the company that took his name. After he handed his business over to his two sons in 1919, the company focused on high quality travel cases and accessories. By 1930, the company was using only the most noble of materials: crocodile skin, tortoiseshell, gold, and silver to produce elaborate cases for their clients, which included the French aristocracy, kings, emperors, maharajahs, and bankers. In 1935 they replaced the enamel in their cases with lacquer, and enlisted the assistance of a Russian who had learned the craft on his travels to China. Ever since, S.T. Dupont’s trademark has been the precise art of lacquer.
They eventually diversified by developing lighters and pens and secured their reputation with luxury pieces made from precious metals and some of the finest Chinese lacquer work in the world. The company is still based in Faverges, Dupont’s family home at the base of the French Alps.

Ligne 2 Series-“Laque de Chine” Noir avec Palladium, “Made in France”
Rich Black Chinese Lacquer with Palladium Trim
Made in France
This auction is for a S.T. Dupont Ligne 2 Series lighter. French made and artfully covered in Chinese style black lacquer and marked “Laque de Chine”, this lighter pays homage to the Art Deco era. The lacquer and palladium trim is highly polished to shine.
The dimensions of the lighter are:
Height: 62mm
Depth: 10.95 mm
Weight: 120 g
All Ligne 2 lighters have the distinctive “ping” when opened.
They are by far the best selling of all Dupont lighters.
This lighter was given to me by my father who was once a cigar smoker. It was used by him, but never taken from his home before given to me. He purchased it in the late 80’s after having moved to Paris, France. The store was located on Boulevard Montparnasse at the corner of rue de Rennes and part of the Galleries Lafayette mall. (The store is still there, but I don’t remember its name.)
For those who have the financial ability, Dupont lighters are a thing of beauty, to be admired and impossible for others not to take note of. The use of such rich materials and the distinctive “ping” upon opening make this a particularly memorable piece. I am selling this lighter as part of a “downsizing” in which I am also selling the majority of my Montblanc and Cartier pen collections. (Please see my other auctions, below.)
Unfortunately, I do not have the box for this lighter.
Bidding starts at $.99. This is a No Reserve Auction.
I am highly confident that this lighter will ultimately be sold at a price that reflects its value. I am re-listing this item, as it previously sold for over $250, but the winner did not complete the transaction.
Serial Number: 1E9AZ95.
Obviously, and as is the case with ALL my auctions, this item is 100% guaranteed authentic.
Thank you for your interest and happy bidding!
David
