Hello from Italy! We have been traveling a lot lately and have some good news for those of you in search of Fine Antique Vestments from Italy. From the mountain villages of Northern Italy to the beautiful towns in Tuscany, Veneto and Umbria we have collected a spectacular group of vestments. Italian Vestments are among the most prized in the world due to their stunning workmanship, fabrics and design. This week we have gorgeous Albs and Surplice, 2 Matching Brocade Dalmatics, an unbelievable set of 22 Altar Boy Vestments, a magnificent embroidered Humeral Veil, as well as a stunning Brocade Cope.
We are offering these pieces in the condition we found them. Many are in superb condition, but we believe that ALL of these Antique Vestments would benefit from a Professional Cleaning.
IN THIS AUCTION we are delighted to present this extraordinary Antique Italian Alb with the Four Evangelists – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John – executed in an exquisite lace patterned Skirt.
Let’s begin with the skirt lace. This is the first of its kind we have encountered here in Italy. The skirt is emblazoned with the images of the Four Evangelists. Each Saint is identified with a Scrolled Banner above their heads that is incorporated into a lace design frame. All of the Evangelists hold a Bible containing the Four Gospels. The body of the generously proportioned Alb is made of beautiful old Linen with a wonderful weight that only these antique vestments have.
The sleeves are edged in a 4-½ inches (11.5 cm) hand crocheted lace border. (Please see photo)
The Alb is in excellent condition showing only very minor wear - appropriate for a piece of this age. There has been a recent addition of a Velcro closure at the neck.
The Alb measures from the shoulder to the hem 62 inches (1 meter 57.5 cm) long. From shoulder to shoulder the Alb is 21 inches (53.5 cm) across. The impressive LACE skirt measures 18 ½ inches (47 cm) Long.
