Lovely, working General Electric wood radio model L-633 manufactured in 1942 by the GE. This radio plays standard broadcast and shortwave from a range of 6 to 18 megacycles. This is a truly beautiful radio, simple yet compelling in design, with an outstanding curved Ingraham designed inlayed cabinet. The color and wood grain on this radio is dazzling, in matched set walnut burl veneer and standard walnut, with gold inlay stripes. The curved dial glass is sage green and contrasts beautifully with the warm walnut tones.
CHASSIS: This radio has new capacitors and a new safe power cord was installed, resistors were checked and replaced if out of tolerance, tubes checked and replaced as needed. All moving parts were cleaned and lubricated. The radio was cleaned inside and out. Knobs and dial move as they should, and the radio picks up many stations across the dial, with excellent tone and volume.
ABOUT THE CABINET FINISH: My whole lacquer finishing process takes approximately 3 weeks, from the first coat of lacquer to the final rub. I build up about 12 to 15 coats of lacquer over a week long period, with a light wet sanding using 800 grit sandpaper on every third coat. When I feel I have built up enough lacquer, I begin wet sanding with 1000, 2000 and 4000 grit sandpaper. I again apply 3 more coats of lacquer, then wet sand with 2000 and 4000 grit sandpaper. I then rub out the finish with fine cut rubbing compound, and finally a super fine glazing compound. No wax. As you can see, it’s more than an afternoons work applying a few zealous glossy coats of lacquer. And of-course, I use only Mohawk professional grade lacquers on my cabinet work. I use a nitrocellulose based lacquer only, never water based lacquer. This is the same type of lacquer used in the factory finish. The results are magnificent- ending up with an almost glass like finish.
DETAILS: The original knobs were meticulously cleaned and buffed. The lighted curved dial glass is nearly perfect. The cabinet edges are clean and sharp. The finish is smooth. Has original cardboard back.
DIMENSIONS: 15.5" wide, 9.5" tall, and 8" deep
