According to family oral history, the chest came from the Philippines as part of the Manila-Acapulco Galleon trade. The “vargueño” (it may also be spelled with a “v”) is above all a portable desk which resembles the top half of a full front desk. It is basically a chest with a lid for writing, and an interior equipped with a good quantity of small drawers and pigeon holes. It was sometimes used for sewing or as a jewel chest instead of solely for reading and writing and storing the necessary implements for these activities.
The Manila-Acapulco Galleon trade began in 1565. The trade served as the fundamental income-generating business for Spanish colonists in Manila, Mexico, Peru, and Cuba. A total of 110 Manila Galleons set sail in the 250 years of the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade (1565 to 1815).
The lock-fascia and latch were both restored and repaired, so that it is fully functional with its key. The legs are in good condition. In fact all the wood is sound and everything works as it should on the chest. The lock is very primitive so we recommend that the winning bidder open and close it with the replacement key, WITHOUT THE LATCH IN THE LOCKING MECHANISM. In this way you will get a feel and an understanding of how the pin moves, and in what direction, (the pin moves right to left when locking). In addition the Tabernacle Style center draw has solid carved African elephant ivory pillars on both sides, framing the Archangel that is guarding the items stored inside. We suspect that the removable sliding panel (behind the pillars) may at one time have been of solid silver, or even carved ivory. We will never know for sure.
The chest size is 17 inches long by 13.75 inches tall, and it is 10.75 inches deep. The legal African elephant ivory inlays are found both on the inside and outside of the chest, they are all carved with designs.
Good luck bidding
