Guide to Papago and Pima Indian Basketry Designs.

This eBay listing is for the sale of one CD ROM title : Papago & Pima Basketry

Below are some images from this CD .

This CD ROM edition contains the works of Mary Krissell in the early 1900's on the Papago and Pima Indian basketry.
147 pages in PDF file format for easy viewing and printing, with many wonderful illustrations.

The Papago and Pima of the Santa Rosa Valley are now long gone as a recognizable Indian culture, despite their having one of the more rational and functional integrations of art, agronomy, cohesive and stable tribal culture, and cultural arts that supported well their identity.

Perhaps this work is one of the last to show well one of their arts and functional crafts, that of basket-making, of baskets highly evolved for purpose specific use, made with skill and beauty, with their patterning and designs smoothly integrated into function.

Pictures of Pima and Papago basket-weavers at work, detailed pictures of the methods and patterns and designs, explanations of how to make such baskets and designs, down to even careful identification of the species of plant used for the cane.

How much better could it get?

Forget the idyllic nonsense about native people all living in harmony with nature, but even setting all the misplaced romance aside, one has to feel, at least in passing, some sense that these were a people whose lives were rich with meaning, art, and a strong sense of identity as a people.

In a world today where art is an afterthought to our lives, and our tools and day to day utility-wear or functional items are rarely decorated and even more rarely hand decorated and uniquely so, seeing these designs and methods reminds us how far we have come from our own roots as tribal people as well.

Art is said to be the window into our souls, the way to see or hear those unspoken myths and deepest primal realities of who we are as individuals and as a people or culture or tribe, and if this is so, that art that is used, functional art, basket-weaving art, textile art, decorated tools, and such, must most deeply reflect those nature of our soul, for it also reflects how we lived and worked.

Enjoy the designs and art, learn from the descriptions on how to make such baskets, or just take a journey into the past with the images of these basket-makers and their beautiful craft.

In any case, the plentiful and clear pictures and drawings of the baskets and methods make this a book worth having.
