*Augustus Thomas was a popular playwright and admirer of Remington's illustrations who first suggested to Remington that he should try his hand at sculpture, Remington's work up until that time having focused mainly upon painting and illustration.
The book titled "Empress Josephine" written by Imbert De Saint-Amand in 1890, is a history of Empress Josephine Bonaparte, wife to Napoleon. The novel beginning with the Empire that Napoleon fought to rule, through the coronation, to Italy, the marriage of Prince Eugene and death of Young Napoleon after the end of the war.
The art of Frederic Remington defined the American West during his lifetime and played a major role in creating the popular image of the West that persists today. In both painting and sculpture, he portrayed the action and drama of the West arguably better then any other artist. Remington's subjects, namely the 'tough' cowboy and the 'wild' American Indian, centered upon conflict. In some of his best works, conflict was not only the subject, but certainly tension was the focus of the artwork.
By the mid-1890s, Remington had become one of the most popular and successful illustrators of his age. His drawings of cavalry troops, cowboys, and Indians filled popular periodicals such as Harper's Weekly and Collier's. His finely rendered almost three-dimensional drawings trained him to use line effectively. Painting illustrations in black and white, such as The Mess Tent at Night, also guided him in controlling values, the degree of light and darkness. His success as an illustrator earned him the freedom to define his own themes, and he matured as an artist.
However, always looking to develop his artistic abilities, Remington turned his attention away from illustration, and began concentrating on painting and sculpture, producing some twenty-two studies prior to his death on December 26, 1909. It was Remington's bronze statues, however which Remington had never himself considered, that would further catapult Remington into the master of Western Art.
