Antique William S. Johnson 4 Column Weight Driven Mantel Clock
Please view my other auctions as I am selling the majority of my personal collection to try and re-open our family owned restaurant which was lost in the Conklin flood of '06.
You are bidding on an excellent Antique William S. Johnson Weight Driven Mantel/Shelf Clock with alarm that I picked up at an Upstate New York Estate Sale. The clock is missing the weights and pendulum, and one of the cat gut strings is broken. As I pull on the time side string, the clock does tick-tock and runs. I do not have the correct weights to check, but as I said, the works do seem to work by pulling the string.
The wooden case is beautiful and in excellent condition with minor wear one would expect from a clock of its age. There is one small area of veneer loss on the right side base which shows in my pictures. The clock measures appx 26.5" tall x 16" long x 4.75" deep. The works are in nice shape and are unmarked as far as I can tell. There is a date hand etched when someone must have worked on the clock, which is 3/11/11? and some initials. The original label is still 100% intact on the inside of the case and reads, in part, "William S. Johnson Weight Driven Clock, 16 Courtlandt St., NY". The top glass piece is wavy, still puttied in and looks to be original. The bottom glass looks to be an old reverse painted glass replacement.
Everything looks to me, to be original with the exception of the bottom reverse painted glass. This is really a great looking clock and would be an excellent addition to any high end collection. If you would like any additional information or pictures, please feel free to email me, prior to bidding, and I will do my best to help you.
